Become a plant parent.

No green thumb required. Just a few principles, applied gently, and a willingness to forgive yourself when something dies.

01

Watering

The single biggest mistake is overwatering. For most houseplants, water only when the top 1โ€“2 inches of soil feel dry. Give a thorough soak until water drains from the bottom, then dump excess water from the saucer. In winter, water roughly half as often.

02

Light

Most houseplants want bright, indirect light โ€” within 3 feet of a window but not in direct afternoon sun. North-facing windows are dim; south-facing are intense. East- and west-facing are usually ideal. Plants stretching toward the window are telling you they want more.

03

Humidity

Tropical plants (calathea, ferns, alocasia) want 50%+ humidity. Group plants together, run a humidifier, or place pots on a pebble tray with water. Misting helps less than people think; humidifiers help more.

04

Repotting

Repot when roots circle the bottom or grow out the drainage holes โ€” typically every 12โ€“18 months. Go up just 1โ€“2 inches in pot size. Use fresh potting mix and a pot with a drainage hole. Avoid repotting flowering or stressed plants.

05

Common problems

Yellow leaves: usually overwatering. Brown crispy tips: low humidity or fluoride from tap water. Leggy growth: not enough light. Pests: wipe leaves with diluted neem oil weekly until clear.
